Office templates on decomissioned server

We have some office templates on a server that has been decomissioned. The
templates were moved to the new file server, and a GPO created to redirect
new template requests to the new location.

The problem is that on previously created files, the documents refer to the
old server location on the old server. This search will sometimes cause word
2003 to crash or the document not open. This is not a problem on word 2007
because the user can hit the esc key to terminate the server request.

How can we redirect these existing documents to search for the template
files in the new location?
