| Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu I have been using Vista with Office 2007 for some time, but last week all of the Office items (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) stopped working from the Start Menu. If I click one of them, the hourglass appears briefly, then nothing happens. If I copy the icon/shortcut to the desktop and doubleclick it, the app starts and it works fine. If I put it back into the start menu from the desktop, it does not work. If I select the app from Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office and "Pin to Start Menu", an icon is created, but it doesn't work. All the non-Microsoft Office items in the Start Menu work fine. I am not sure whether this is a Vista or Office problem - I'll post a similar query in the Vista forum. |

| Re: Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu Try R-clicking the Application Icon in the Start menu and select Run As and pick Administrator. If that works, then I would surmise there is a Permissions issue with Vista and the Office folder in the start menu. adrian_jhb wrote: > I have now run it, but the diagnostic found no problems... > > "DL" wrote: > > >>Youve run Office diagnostics? >> >>"adrian_jhb" <adrian_jhb@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >>news:D8ECB2D4-EFD5-42E9-AB35-B4A9D24542EC@microsoft.com... >> >>>I have been using Vista with Office 2007 for some time, but last week all >>>of >>>the Office items (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) stopped working from >>>the >>>Start Menu. | Re: Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu None of the Office items on the Start Menu have a Run As option (other items on the Start menu do have the Run as Administrator option). | Re: Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu There is something definitely messed up with your Vista installation. Could be malware or just broken permissions. That Office will start from a shortcut in some places and not others is very suspicious. I suggest the folks in the Vista group will have a better idea about what you need to do to fix it. adrian_jhb wrote: > None of the Office items on the Start Menu have a Run As option (other items > on the Start menu do have the Run as Administrator option). | Re: Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu In article <648D8325-A2DF-4E2B-AFFB-410864E7B573@microsoft.com>, Adrian jhb wrote: > None of the Office items on the Start Menu have a Run As option (other items > on the Start menu do have the Run as Administrator option). Same here but if you browse to where Office is installed and rightclick the appropriate EXE file, you do get the Run As Admin option. And if you haven't already done so, also try running Microsoft Office Diagnostics (under Microsoft Office Tools, under Microsoft Office on the start menu) > I tried adding > Office items to the Quick Launch - they did get there but would not run from > there... > > "Bob I" wrote: > > > Try R-clicking the Application Icon in the Start menu and select Run As > > and pick Administrator. | Re: Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu Given the Office applications themselves work, and the only difference is where in the directory structure on the hard drive the shortcut is "fired" from. What conclusion do you come to? adrian_jhb wrote: > Thanks, Bob I > > I came to the Office group when the folks in the Vista group said that this > was an Office problem, not a Vista problem... > > Thanks for trying, anyway! > > "Bob I" wrote: > > >>There is something definitely messed up with your Vista installation. >>Could be malware or just broken permissions. | Re: Office 2007 shortcuts no longer work from the Start Menu Is there a logical conclusion other than to conclude that there seems to be no logical solution? Is it maybe a registry problem (does the registry have anything do do with where shortcuts are fired from?) - if so, it is probably beyond me, and I do not have a lot of faith in registry repair utilities. It also doesn't seem to be a hard drive problem as such - a drive analysis reveals no problems. I can get by as things are so I'll stick with it until I have to, for some reason, reload the system (or just the Office package, maybe). Thanks again for your efforts...
