| Dumb questions I will be making the move to Windows 7 and also upgrading from Office XP (old version) to Office 2007. Dumb question 1 - how many licenses does the OS come with? Can I load the same number on two machines? Dumb question 2 - same question but this time for Office 7. Thanks for any insight. It's time to spend some money! |

Windows has always been one licence per installation - so in fact (AFAIK) if you install the same copy on a VM on the same machine, you may need a second licence.... > Dumb question 2 - same question but this time for Office 7. Presumably you mean Office 2007? Normally a Retail copy will allow one installation on the Primary Device (and it doesn't specify what the primary device is) and one install on a portable computer owned and used by you. But check your EULA - some versions do differ. |

| Re: Dumb questions Baz, If you purchase the Windows 7 Home Premium Family pack you will receive 3 licenses for Windows 7. If you purchase a single version of Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate you will only receive one license. There is a similar "setup" when it comes to Microsoft Office 2007. If you purchase Office 2007 Home and Student you automatically receive one license valid for installation on up to three machines. If you purchase Microsoft Office 2007 Standard, Microsoft Office 2007 Professional, or Microsoft Office 2007 Small Business you will only receive a license key valid for installation on one machine. For additional assistance and feedback with Windows 7 Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category . | Re: Dumb questions Small correction. A purchase of any Retail Suite except Home and Student can be installed on a primary machine and a portable used by the same person, so you actually receive one license good for a 2 machine install for the same person. But, as always, please read the Microsoft Software License Agreement for details. -- Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook] Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Not correct. The retail EULA states: You may install on one primary device and one portable device". That's TWO machines. |
