Repairing Office installation, missing file

Outlook froze up and I could restart it only in Safe Mode. Then I attempted
to use the Repair facility under the Help menu. In doing so, I was asked on
insert the CD. But my (old) laptop came with Office 97 and I only have that
CD. I upgraded online a while back and don't have a CD for Office 2003. I
am now unable to use any Office product. The message asking me to insert the
2003 CD includes this error: "A required installation file SKU113.CAB could
not be found."

How exactly did you "upgrade online"? If you downloaded an installation
program to upgrade you should have saved the downloaded file. It is probably
no longer going to be available to you by download again. If you did this
on a network then you need to go back to the network to obtain the file.

Re: Repairing Office installation, missing file

It's been a long time since I upgraded to Office 2003 - I recall that I
purchased it over the internet - can't recall when - and I have been unable
to find any files on the PC related to that. This is a personal/home
computer, so I don't have a "network" for this.

If you still have the license email look on it to see if you see the letters
FPP or OEM or MLK on it. If not you probably won't be able to get a
duplicate. If you find the email and it says FPP that would be a retail
version and you can follow the link below for attempting to replace it. If
OEM or MLK you would need to go back to the company you purchased the
program from.

information on OEM versions of some software.

There is a Microsoft Office folder at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office. But I don't know where to look from there - or what to do?? Sorry to be such a nuisance - clearly I am not technically savvy.

Re: Repairing Office installation, missing file

If you have Outlook Express, and you will have assuming a none Vista PC, you
should be able to open Outlook Express and Import mail from Outlook

If you didn't print out the email that the license key was enclosed in you
will be out of luck. Looks like it is time to purchase a new version of
Office (or use www.openoffice.org 's free Office clone).

You unfortunately now realize why you need to copy anything downloaded to a
storage media that is not destroyed by a computer crash. Emails should be
printed and saved, downloaded files are saved onto CD/DVD or other removable
hard drives.

Re: Repairing Office installation, missing file

My laptop is 4 years old. I think this may be a good time to buy a new one.
Are they still using Vista as the OEM - or can I find one with XP?

Depends on the vendor and how much you are willing to pay.

Replacing the computer won't help you get Office running. You won't have it
on the new computer either. OEM versions of the productivity software
(Office) while it may be cheaper it is more expensive in the long run as you
can't move it to another computer. The place to purchase retail or update
versions of Office software is normally Amazon (they seem to have the best
prices normally.)

As for XP as an operating system, that would depend on the computer model
and manufacturer. I just saw a HP from PC Mall that ships with XP Pro as
the OS.
http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/promoti...wt.mc_id=31050
in the center of the screen. (Rebate apparently only applies if you have
also purchased a case at the same time so be careful with that.)

Intel Core 2 Duo T6570 2.10GHz, 2GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM, 250GB 5400rpm SATA,
15.6" LED-backlit, DVD+/-RW SuperMulti, Webcam, 56K Modem, Gigabit Ethernet,
802.11a/b/g/draft-n, Microsoft Windows XP Pro (Includes FREE Slip Case +
1GB Memory WITH Installation for 3GB Total Memory!) It won't have MS Office
as a free product, only a trial that will have to be uninstalled.

Looks pretty good for a deal. I have purchased from them before and have had
good service from them.

Re: Repairing Office installation, missing file

Well some digging shows that I purchased this Gateway in 2005 and it did come
with Office 2003 (OEM) - so I don't know what I was thinking about the later
upgrade. I have lost all of the Gateway documentation, CDs, etc. I tried to
contact Gateway and learned that they sold their support business a couple of
years and that company is now in bankruptcy - and they don't offer any info
about contacting them! So I may try the replacement software link offered up
a little higher in this message stream. I have also submitted a (paid)
request to MS Support. I really don't want to buy a new laptop right now -
although I am considering a netbook - Lenovo! Thanks to Everyone here for
all of their help.
