over-write highlighted text or use backspace to delete highlighted

in Word 2003 and Outlook 2003 (so far only tools I have noticed the
folllowing behavior)
when I go out and want to remove text that already exists in the past I was
able to just highlight the text and then start typing, as I would type the
highlighted text would be removed and the new text would be shown, after some
windows updates I notice that now when I highlight text the only way to
remove is to select the delete key and then continue on.
How do I get back the way the office tools used to function?

RE: over-write highlighted text or use backspace to delete highlighted

for word the resolution was click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the
"Typing replaces selection" box | OK.
By fixing this in word it also fixed in Outlook
