Email mail merge and attachments

I can not do this: I have been to Doug Robbins' link but even at the start
where it tells me to make sure that the reference is set up - I have 2
references, one of which I can remove, the other I can't.

I can not get a directory set up as for some reason my step by step thing
only wants to me do letters, and I am now considering giving up, but I don't
want to!

Can someone please help?

Further update:
Having now realised that I can not read properly I am trying to do again:
so question now is:
where do you set up the reference? Is it in outlook? If so do you have to
run the mail merge from there rather than from word? Or if you do it once
should all programmes be updated?
