Word and Excel hang when opening and saving files - any advice

I am using office pro 2003. when I try to open or save files in Word or Excel
I frequently get a 'not responding' message and the programs hang for 30
seconds or more before the screen flashes and everything returns to normal.
This also happened in Office pro 2000

I have been given lots of advise by different people. I was advised to
upgrade to 2003. I have now been advised that it is a Microsft programming
problem that will be solved by office 2007. I have been told that it happens
because I have two computers and a laptop networked. Lots of advise but no
solutions. Does anyone know how to overcome this, please?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
