Delay when using "save as" or "file open" dialog in all apps

I found many questions like this in the newsgroups, but no specific
answers which applied to my situation, so I thought I'd post this
*with* the answer.

I have been having this problem in Windows 2000. Apps open quickly
enough, but when I attempt to change the folder in "file open" or "save
as" the system hangs for 20 or 30 seconds. It turns out that I had two
network resources mapped as letter drives which were no longer
available (machines had been decommissioned). Widnows was looking for
these resources any time I opened a "save as" or "open" dialog in any
application. Disconnecting the drives fixed that up right quick.

So if anyone else runs across this problem, then check all of your
network drives to see if any have gone missing, and if so, disconnect
them and see if this helps.

Re: Delay when using "save as" or "file open" dialog in all apps

Thank you Chris for the information. Unfortunately that isn't the only
cause. (I've been meaning to ask this for awhile.)

I'm using Win XP Pro with Office 2003. After I reboot, the first time
that I open Word or Excel and do a save-as, it takes nearly a minute
to open the dialog box. I do have logs of mapped drives (11) but even
if I go through all of them in Windows Explorer opening sub-folders to
make sure the mapped drive is active before using Word, it still takes
nearly a minute to open the save-as dialog. Once I have opened the
save-as dialog once, any subsequent time that I use save-as opens in
1-2 seconds, even if I've closed Word since the last time I did a
save-as. Once I reboot, the time goes back to a minute. Any other
suggestions?

Yes, "Disconnect unavailable drives" is a FSA or Frequently Supplied
Answer. 2-3 times a week, seems many people don't search before asking.

It's checking each connection. After a reboot, it has no idea what's out
there.
