Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

I just purchased a 2007 Publisher, installed it on my laptop and for
some reason I'm unable to open any files I create. It keeps giving me
the error message 'Publisher cannot open the file'. I've never had this
problem before with any other software and don't know whether it's some
setting on my laptop that needs adjusting or what...it's really bizarre.

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

Which version of Publisher did you create those files with?

Are you trying to open them across a network?

Do you have a default printer selected in the Printer folder?
Have you activated Publisher?

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

It's a brand new 2007 version....it was installed successfully and
activated. I created a file - saved and then when I try to go back to
reopen the file it then gives me the error message. Do you think this
is a software issue or something to do with my laptop itself?

I am currently having the same issue. the interesting thing is half the
users in my group have the problem, half of them don't. But it just
started and it affected all of the ones having the issue at the same
time. Perhaps a MS update gone wrong?

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

If you'd checked the Publisher newsgroupfirst, you would have seen that this
is a known issue with SP2. There was a hotfix issued on Jun 30.

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

I've tried to download the hotfix, but Microsoft sends the URL to
download the fix in an email and the link in the email is broken... any
other suggestions? I've read other places that it's due to MS office
SP2... the files are stored on a network drive, but they will open fine
on a computer that doesn't have SP2.

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

Exactly - when SP2 is installed on a computer, it can no longer open the
files.

I wonder if the link is really broken. Why do you say that? What happens
when you click on it?

JoAnn,

That hotfix is getting installed correctly on our systems, but we are still
getting that message on some. Is there a subsequent hotfix I should look
for?

Thanks,

Tom

That's the only one I know of. Have you checked to see what's different on
the systems that get it and those that don't?

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

Actually, I'm finding some files created in Pub2003 open in Pub2007 after
patching and others don't - on the same system. I just tested that on my
system. The files still do open in 2003, though.

JoAnn, Maybe the registry fix...
Error message when you try to open a publication in Publisher: "Publisher cannot
open the file" or "Publisher has detected a problem"

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

KB928890 didn't help either.

It doesn't matter if the files are on a share of on my desktop, they fail
either way.

Thanks,

Re: Microsoft Publisher error - cannot open file

Having the same issue here on a Publisher 2007 install. Fully up to
date w/ hotfix included....tried registry workaround (KB928890) as
well. Publisher files open fine on a vanilla load of Publisher 2007
pre-updates.
