Outlook 2003 SP2 Incomming new messages display with grey backgrou

Currently running Windows XP SP3 With Office 2003.
We are having a problem with Outlook 2003 SP2. Incomming messages open with
a medium grey background making it difficult at best to read the black text.
Have checked the Tools/Options/Mail Format/Stationery settings and that is
not the problem it seems to be a default setting in how incomming messages
are displayed but can not find out where to reset it?
