how can I delete highlighted text using the delete key

After using Word forseveral years and office 2000, something changed when I
installed office 2003. When I double-click to highlight a word (or block of
words) to delete them, in the past, hitting the <delete> key would delete
whatever was highlighted.

Now, I get a small message on the bottom left of my screen that says:
"Delete Block? No (Yes)" Hovering the cursor over either choice and
clicking, does nothing. I have to use the <cut> icon to remove areas.

would like to return to my original and easier method...any solution?
