Outlook Express 6 compacted my email messages last night, however when I
opened it this morning all messages (approximately 400) after 11/09/2007 are
missing from my Inbox. All other folders seem fine and new messages also
appear.

Two things:

1. One should not store messages in the Inbox or Sent Items or you will,
as you have seen, lose messages.

2. Dump Outhouse Distress and get a real email program like Thunderbird.
You can get it at http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird. It will, if you so
desire, import all your email from Outhouse Distress. It has an
excellent junk filter and real time spell check. To back up T-Bird, all
you have to do is copy the identity in the Profile folder and you will
have backed up all your messages, rules and email accounts. You can also
get a plug in that will give you a calendar.

I have exactly the same problem. Suddenly all emails from the inbox (OE 6 on XP) after mid 2008 vanished. Also if I send myself an email, it says 1 email in Inbox, but when I look - its not there. This can be repeated any number of times. Anybody got any ideas? - some of these emails are important!! (By the way I couldn't getanything from that link someone kindly suggested).

If you are using Outlook Express as your newsreader they should open.
