Sending document as attachment from Word 2003 loses email body

When I email a document directly from Word 2003 by using File - send to
recipient as attachment - any additional information, incl greeting and
address detail, disappear from the message when sent. This is a sudden
problem which I think might be due to a changed security setting or update,
but can't find the cause.
I can also not send an html page by using the "Send to" command - just a
blank email gets sent.
