Re: Reinstalling Office 2003

No it wont touch data files, but then its also unlikely to help with
whatever outlook problem you have

Re: Reinstalling Office 2003

Thanks for the answer, DL. I couldn't find an answer in the Outlook group,
but my problem is that when I try to open Outlook, it doesn't respond. I try
in 'Safe Mode', still doesn't respond and finally the 'reconfigure' tries and
fails. This goes on two or three cycles and finally opens. I've had Office
on my Dell 4600 since 2003 and never a problem. I use IE-6 and no other
problems with Office programs. I'm at the point of trying Gmail but keep
getting an error message, "Runtime Error" and the internet shuts down. I've
checked MS & Google discussion groups for help but nothing has worked to
counter the Runtime error. It's frustrating. Thanks again.

Re: Reinstalling Office 2003

Things to try in OL
1) Ensure office is updated
2) Detect/Repair, within OL
3) scanpste.exe, on your data file whilst OL is closed, run several times if
it detects err's
4) Event viewer, for any err msgs
5) Maybe a new profile
6) A defrag & chkdsk
IE6, shouldnt you be on IE7, or are you pre Winxp?

Re: Reinstalling Office 2003

Close Outlook. Find and rename outcmd.dat to .old. (If using Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to enable searching hidden and system folders.)

Once you have done so, reopen Outlook and it should open fine. You will need to rebuild any custom toolbars or customizations as the file outcmd.dat controls how the toolbars display. When it becomes corrupted, it will cause Outlook to hang because it cannot create the toolbars that you expect.

Re: Reinstalling Office 2003

No, i'm in XP, just haven't upgraded to IE7 (I'd heard there were still
problems and not enough difference to change from IE6). But I'll try your
suggestions and upgrade to IE7 too, anything to help. Thanks again for your
help and quick replies. I appreciate it.

Milly,

Thank you again, it seems to be working fine. And your comment, re:
scratching my head, was perfect. Cute & accurate. Thanks.
