Both “Microsoft Office Document Scanning” and “Microsoft Office Document
Imaging” utilities fail when trying to scan a document. Although both
utilities launch and run correctly from the “Start” button and "...Document
Imaging" will launch and run correctly whenever a .TIF file is accessed, both
utilities produce failure reports and close whenever trying to scan. All
other scanner applications (Word, Adobe Acrobat, Corel, etc.) run without a
hitch, so the problem isn't with the scanner. This problem occurred
immediately following the installation of Office 2003 SP3.

My System Stats: DELL XPS DskTop, 2G RAM, Win XP-Pro w/all SPs, Office 2003
Pro w/all SPs (including SP3), HP ScanJet 4C & tons of HDD space.

If you relay heavily on these two utilities, better wait until fix is
available before installing Office 2003 SP3 – just my thinking!

Hmmm. I'm using a Lexmark scanner with Office 2003 SP3 through MS Office Document Scanning 2003 and not having that problem.

If you open the document scanning app and create a new preset will it scan correctly?

Are you using a TWAIN driver for the scanner?

Are you using an Automatic Document Feeder for the scanner.

What are the exact steps you're following and is an error report being created with the 'Send to Microsoft' button? If so click the
link in the dialog for more details and can you provide the information from that additional detail screen?

Your reply gives me hope :-) In answer to your questions:

*Creating a new Preset doesn't help -- still get the "...encounterd a
problem and need to close" error message.

*Yes, MS TWAIN driver 5.1.2600.0 (scsiscan.sys; hpsjmcro.dll; wiafbdrv.dll)
is used for the scanner. However, I'm not sure what driver MS Office Doc
Scan & Imaging apps are trying to use???

*No Automatic Document Feeder installed

*The steps I'm using are 1. Open MS Office Document Scanning; 2. In the
"Scan New Document" pop-up window, select one of the Presets and 3. Click on
the "Scan" button.

*Yes, this produces the error message (which I have sent to MS) showing an
error in mspscan.exe. When I return, later this evening, I will try to trap
and forward more of the details for the error report. Keep in mind, all my
other apps using the scanner run without a hitch.

BTW, the Scanner is a legacy HP ScanJet 4C flatbed running on an Adaptec
AIC-7850 PCI SCSI Controller card. Although this card is NOT plug and play,
Win XP-Pro finds it without difficulty and its always functioned with both MS
Office Doc Scan & Imaging in the past.

Additional Information:

* I have reestablished .TIF and .MDI file associations (no help); and...
* I have turned off Data Exe. Prevention (DEP) for both mspscan.exe and
mspview.exe (no help)

Judging by posts here and under "Office Updates" this is a system-wide issue
with Office SP3. My work-around (for now) is using other apps to scan my
docs in .TIF format and then use MS Office Document Imaging OCR funtion to
capture needed text.

The simple solution was to follow "Pavel" post of 10/17/07 and replace the
updated mspscan.exe file with the old (original) version that was swapped out
by the Office 2003 SP3 update. All systems are now "Go"!

You can find Pavel's post by searcing on "Scanning not working after
installing SP3".

I had a similar problem with Office 2003 after applying Service Pack 3 -
Microsoft Office Document Scanning crashed when pressing the "Scan" button. I
read somewhere or the other (can't remember where) that the problem is with
the length of the name of the scanner device (in Control Panel->Scanners and
Cameras). In my case, the name of the scanner was "Hewlett-Packard Officejet
R40 Scanner". I renamed this device to "HP Officejet Scanner R40" and cured
the problem!
