Something's happened to my character map. How do I get it back?

My character map has seemed to disappeared from my computer. I used to have
a shortcut in my tray, but it's gone now and I can't even find it in my
program files under "Accessories" or "System Tools" I can still find the
characters I want by doing an "Insert Symbol" in Word and Excel, but this
doesn't help when I need a special character inserted into an e-mail.
Besides, the shortcut was just so much easier. I've gone to "Add Remove
Windows Components" under "Add Remove Programs" from the Control Panel and
made sure that it was checked there, but still nothing.

I'm running Windows XP Professional. Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.

Look in your Windows\System32 folder for charmap.exe. If it is there create
a shortcut to the program file and drag it to the desktop or where you
desire it.

If not there do a search for it and then create the shortcut.
