Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

We are starting to upgrade from Office 2003 to 2007. Everything works great
except for the document scanning. Whenever you try to scan from our Canon
printer, the program shuts down. I can scan into the clip organizer with no
problem and 2003 version worked ok too.

I downloaded firmware for our printer dated 4/30/07 so I am sure it is the
latest and greatest. Plus, it works for clips, like I said. Here is a blurb
from the event log message:
Faulting application mspscan.exe, version 12.0.4518.1014, stamp 4541757d,
faulting module msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.762, stamp 45712238, debug? 0,
fault address 0x00014ca3.

Any ideas?

What steps are you taking to scan in 2007?

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

Select Microsoft Office Document Scanning. Select either black & white or
color. Click Scan. (the scanner is already preselected). At that point,
the program crashes and asks me if I want to send the info to microsoft.

Have you looked for newer scanning drivers/software already?

Yes. I wouldn't have posted if I hadn't done the normal troubleshooting
stuff already.
Thanks.

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

Sorry, that reply sounded snotty! I usually try everything before I ask. I
did talk to technical support from my scanner's manufacturer and they say it
is a Microsoft issue related to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827100.

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

Believe me, Patrick does not give snotty remarks. I do - but not him.

And where/when did you say what you've already tried finding updated drivers
(you mentioned firmware - that's different) and why did you think that your
scanner mfr would own up to anything when they can blame it on someone else?

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

That KB doesn't really give any explanation as to why this could be the
reason. It just describes how to scan in Office 2003 and 2007.
My guess why they provided you with that KB is: Office 2003 has its own
scanning software built-in. That wizard was removed in Office 2007, but
not completely. It was actually added to OneNote 2007 and remained in
the clipart gallery software. For all the other Office 2007 programs
though, you need to use the scanning software provided by the
manufacturer or by Windows. My guess is that your manufacturer's
software somehow ties into the now-removed Office scanning module and
its non-existence causes it to crash.
If you haven't tried removing, reboot and reinstalling the scanner
software/driver, I'd try that first.
Also, when you select a source, see if there is a TWAIN option there.
TWAIN is the standard API for scanners, so if you can scan via that one,
you'd be avoiding the piece that probably relies on the Office module.
If none of that helps, then I would keep bugging the manufacturer.
Citing a KB that just describes how scanning works in Office 2003 and
2007 sounds to me like they know their software has a compatibility
problem and they either don't feel like fixing it, don't know if they'll
fix it or when or just don't know what is going on.

Thank you JoAnn. I was referring to my own snotty remark, not Patrick. --

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

Thanks. I will give them some thought. I know that KB didn't really tell me
anything either. I was just passing along what they told me.

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

Hi Patrick,

I think you may be mixing two different scanner functionalities here.
(1) The MS Office Document Scanning Component from MS Office Document Imaging with
(2) the previous version "Insert from Scanner/Camera link" in the Office app menus.

The former is intact in Office 2007 but the presets have had problems with certain scanners, especially ones using 48bit resolution
or sheet feeders.

The menu command - scan from Camera/Scanner can be used in all of the apps still with a small workaround.

its non-existence causes it to crash.

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

Hi Bob,

Somehow I was afraid I'd get myself into trouble with answering an ODI
question. Thanks for setting it straight!

Re: Microsoft Office Document Scanning 2007 version

I am having the same problem with my HP g85, same error in the event viewer.
If i belive you correctly Microsoft document imaging is NOT included with
Office 2007 even though it has an installation option?
It worked fine on the same system with Vista (returned to XP due to critical
buisness software application incompatability). the problem is in the 2007
version of mspscan.exe - 2003 version works properly.

the work around i have used is to unistall Office 2007 and delete all
versions of mspscan.exe and related files, install office 2003 with document
scanning, then reistall office 2007 with the document scanning option as not
installed.

I dont really want both version installed on my machine, I expected Office
2007 to handle this critical task on its own.
