I am trying to use a barcode font in Word 2007 and it won't scan. I have a
3of9 font and I am using * at both ends of the code but Word doesn't print
the end *. So it cannot be scanned by a barcode reader.

If I cut and paste the same info into Excel, it scans.

Any thoughts?

Word adds bold style when you type the second asterisk.

I would suggest you try another font, such as this one at
http://www.morovia.com/font/code39.asp.
