| Microsoft Document Imaging disappeared Hello, I have been using MDI & find it very useful. All of a sudden, it has disappeared ! When I try to open one of my mdi files, it says it needs to be re-installed. I am wondering how this has happened. I certainly had no errors & I did not uninstall it. Could this have happened through some sort of cleaning program (like a registry cleaner)? I am going to try re-installing but I would like to know WHY this has happened. I hope it has not been an MS Automatic Update weirdy. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me on this. Tam. |

| Re: Microsoft Document Imaging disappeared Thanks for the link but it did not answer my question. I already know how to use MDI. I use it regularly. My issue is that the program disappeared & I did not uninstall it, therefore I would like to know possible reasons why so it does not reoccur. If there is an issue with my Reg cleaner, I want to be able to inform them so they can correct it before it does any more damage. The only reason I think it might be that is because it is the only program I have instealled recently. I saw on another forum that someone else also "lost" MDI. The only answer they were given was to use PDF Creator instead. I also have that but prefer to use MDI. I re-installed MDI successfully but I would still like to know why it disappeared. Tam. |

| Re: Microsoft Document Imaging disappeared Hi Tam, MS's recommendation is to avoid using 'helpful' utilities, such as registry cleaners around MS Office. Office often has its own way of 'innovating' that may not be recognized :) There are also cases where installing software replaces a shared DLL file version and can break the connection to the MS Office Document Imaging Writer (virtual printer). ============== <<"oldhen" <oldhen@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:F66FE7E5-E1A9-4612-B02A-231575FC15BB@microsoft.com... | Re: Microsoft Document Imaging disappeared it is unclear how you concluded a registry cleaner may have caused the issue you are having. it is possible that the registry was initially corrupted during it's frequent read/writes as it was designed to do. Therefore, if you think the mdi keys were cleared out of the registry then you should also consider that they were likely corrupted in the registry beforehand. a registry cleaner purpose is to validate registry keys with the file system and it would have removed orphaned keys or keys that were corrupted or keys that were replicated, etc..., thus saving you from the possibility of a complete disaster with the registry hive. there is a fallacy with the mind set of those who claim registry cleaners do damage, when in fact their designed and purpose is simple, ie confirm the validity of each key. you also did not consider that maybe the prefetch file for the office imaging may be corrupted or possibly a service got turned off or maybe the mdi printer driver got deleted or modified. maybe you installed a third party software and it took over the .tiff extension and didn't reset it back to mdi or whatever.... Frankly, the lost of mdi can not be attributed to a registry cleaner. I use several registry cleaners and none affect "keys" that are valid. here is a helpful link from the experts who programmed windows and this tool. Microsoft has spent millions of dollars and many man hours to create this program as they have done since win95: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/a...leaner_why.htm you can repair office using its detect and repair. or you can simply focus on document imaging since the feature is considered an advanced feature found inside the office modify or install dialog... you can try a start > run > mspview if it opens then the software is intact if not then go to add/remove programs repair microsoft office select advance customization go to tools and select it. this should fix you up, if it does not then something else is askew.... Because it is the only new thing I have installed/updated since MDI last worked. I received no error messages. Thank you for answering in such detail. I have found it interesting. I also find Bobs comment about the shared DLL files interesting too. You have both given differing opinions but they are both valid. The OneCare link is interesting. Last time I looked it was only valid for the US but I see that is not the case anymore. Tam. |
