<SNIP>

Run 'glxgears' and report the FPS that you get.

this is only output I get:
dave@mepis1:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b

The gears run but they halt fora microsecond during rotation.
Maybe its the best I should hope for. Maybe its just a loop in the program?

My guess is that you don't have an OpenGL driver loaded, or the hardware
doesn't support accelerated 3D video. Dunno.

That is strange. glxgears should give you some output to the terminal
you started it from, if you let it run for a few seconds. Also if you
make the glxgears window bigger, you will see a big slowdown in the
drawing of the gears if you don't have hardware acceleration.

gjs@blackbox:~$ glxgears
62 frames in 5.2 seconds = 11.999 FPS <-- small window
17 frames in 5.3 seconds = 3.229 FPS <-- big window

This is true.

danc@moria:~$ glxgears
44743 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8948.417 FPS <-- small window
8436 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1687.043 FPS <-- big window

This is with hardware acceleration (Nvidia), obviously.
