| pan newsreader pane colors? (how to change?) Anybody know if it is possible (and if so how) to change the colors of the panes (groups/body background color) in the Pan newsreader? I would like to alter them to get something other than the stark white that is burning my retina out like staring at the sun on July 4th. Any help appreciated. ;/ Beowulf |

I've just tested this and I'm using Pan with the stark white now a "puke green". You will also need to check the box for applying colors to non-KDE applications at the bottom of the color selection page in the control center. This will of course also effect all other apps, but if white burns your retinas in Pan, it probably does so in other applications as well. HTH. |

While I agree it might feel that way now, Pan seemed stagnant for some time and has suddenly gained some momentum, so I wouldn't count it out just yet. -- David "On the Internet, no one knows you're using Windows NT" (Submitted by Ramiro Estrugo, restrugo@fateware.com) |

Since you're using such an outdated version, maybe it didn't have this capability. I don't recall. Pan obviously isn't my primary newsreader. |

The "momentum" is not necessarily in the positive direction. The newer versions are quite lacking in configuration options as compared to the 0.14.2.x versions. Supposedly faster and use less memory, but that doesn't outweigh options and stability, in my book. The last "good" version of Pan was 0.14.2.91, IMHO. -- "Ubuntu" -- an African word, meaning "Slackware is too hard for me". |

The entire 0.XXX series are beta releases (including 0.112 in Mandriva 2007). They are still bugfixing and adding featrues to the rewritten code. Only the old 0.14.2 is marked stable. -- -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

It lacks the strong filter/rule set of the 0.14.92 and the ability to separate newsservers but the memory usage is much better. For exampe, the new filters require lots of work and you can't use them to simply delete records. I have to score those I want, hide those scored then delete all articles not hidden. The idea of consolidating servers sounds good but not so good when using multiple servers and one of them has a download limit. Ie, Pan 0.120 doesn't care if you don't want to download articles from a particular server or not. Download speed is variable, sometimes it stops in the middle of download. Still a better with the memory, 0.14.92 chokes about 200,000 article headers but 0.120 goes to 800,000 before choking. If no other processes are running maybe 2 mil. headers. |

I don't much care about the memory usage, to be honest. <snip> > Download speed is variable, sometimes it stops in the middle of download. > Still a better with the memory, 0.14.92 chokes about 200,000 article > headers but 0.120 goes to 800,000 before choking. Don't care much about that aspect either, as I don't bother with binary newsgroups. -- "Ubuntu" -- an African word, meaning "Slackware is too hard for me". |
