| Firefox 2.0 in PCLinuxOS ? PCLinuxOS comes with Firefox 1.5.0.7 and Synaptic knows no later version. How do I install Firefox 2.0 in PCLinuxOS? Need rpm (I think), but Mozilla does not provide that. BTW, I am a Linux newbie, trying to make the transition from Windows to Linux, but that's a complex affair. Mark |

Space problem, clear more space, Missing library, install it. permission problem, I alwasy install as root for everyone. But, those are all SWAGs, without the error message, who knows. |

I uninstalled the pre-installed Firefox 1.5.x and extracted the Firefox 2.x archive to a directory. That was it. It was that simple. Run Firefox by clicking on Firefox, and make a shortcut for the menu. Mark |

Extracted it and it created firefox directory. I added an icon to the panel and gave the path/location of the firefox but to no avail. It opened the preinstalled FF1.5. I then did yum remove firefox which removed it. Then got FF2 again but it failed to launch. Surprisingly, on RH9 and even FC5 which I had earlier, FF2 worked fine but not on FC6. Again I chose yumex to get FF but it only installed FF1.5 I googled for the steps, unfortunately, it didnt help much. Rgds Poms |

I'm unable to recall the exact error but it was something to the effect of "cannot launch firefox" . Yesterday, I googled for installation of FF2 on FC6. Tried to follow the steps as listed therein. Yet again, it started FF1.5. BTW, in Windows, the ideal path of any installation is C:\Programfiles\foldername. In Linux, whats the normal path? As, I reinstalled FF1.5 with yumex, where does FF1.5 reside? The "which firefox" output is /usr/bin/firefox On FC5 and RH9 when I chose FF2, I made custom launcher for which the path was /home/poms/firefox/firefox. But no such success in FC6. Rgds Poms |

| Re: Firefox 2.0 in PCLinuxOS ? Just get the bin package.....avoid rpms....if u get errors for dependencies...try to get the rpm package for that dependencies...first install those dependencies then try firefox...otherwise if u have bin package just make that package in executable form by command: chmod+X package name....then cd into that directory of bin package and then type the command as : ./Firefix and press enter....hope it helps Regards Abdulrehman |

I downloaded FF2 from firefox.com which gives direct option and it downloads firefox-2.0.0.1.tar.gz. I do not know if this is bin package or rpm. Now even I dont remember what I did trying to follow the googled help output but out of frustration I have again uninstalled FF and now doing yumex which will yet again install FF 1.5.0.9-1.fc6 Again, I will be back to square one. Nothing seems to be working as what apparently seem to be "simple" steps for experts are definitely daunting tasks for newbie like me. I would also like to know why the following steps would work in RH9, FC5 but not in FC6. 1]I download FF2 in my /home directory. 2]I do -zxvf to untar it. It creates the FF directory. 3]cd firefox 4]now here, just typing firefox would launch the browser. But no success in FC6. Rgds Poms |

If you're in the directory containing the firefox program, then just typing 'firefox' would normally fail as the current directory isn't on your search path by default. You normally have to type './firefox'. I haven't followed this thread from the start, but it seems to me that you're trying to run FF2 from /home/you/firefox while you've still got FF1.5 installed in /usr/bin/firefox. If you were to look in /usr/bin/firefox, you'd see that the 'firefox' program is actually a symbolic link to the real program in another directory. You need to replace that symbolic link with a link to FF2. You can do this by opening a console and entering 'su' and then root's password when asked. Then enter these 2 lines: rm /usr/bin/firefox ln -s /home/you/firefox/firefox /usr/binfirefox In that last line, substitute your user name for the 'you'. You should still find that 'which firefox' replies with '/usr/bin/firefox' but you should find that typing 'firefox' in a console (or './firefox' from within the firefox directory itself) should run FF2. And any icons you've got for Firefox should also run FF2. I would suggest that you uninstall FF1.5 before you do the above so that you don't run into any problems later on when you try to upgrade your system and your link gets overwritten. I don't know PCLinuxOS, but you should be able to remove FF1.5 with 'rpm -e firefox' in a console. -- Garry Knight garryknight@gmx.net |

When I got the libstdc++.so.5 error, I merely did yum install libstdc++.so.5 in console and that got FF2 running. Now whats really missing are my bookmarks, not much though. Btw, is there anyway to get the News tab in FF2 which will list current news? Garry and all others here, I sincerely appreciate all your help. Thanks a ton!! Rgds Poms |
