| system freeze-up question My Ubuntu 6.10 system froze up a couple of times yesterday, only when playing Unreal Tournament 2004 (full screen mode). ctrl+alt+backspace had not effect, neither did ctrl+alt+del Totally frozen, had to use reset switch on PC case. Is there anything that can be done in such situations to regain control without a hardware reset as I did? Try to open a console (Ctrl-Alt-F2), if that works log in and kill the game (use ps/top to find the game's PID). Or, do a proper reboot from that console. 2. SSH into the box from another and do the same as above. -- "Ubuntu" -- an African word, meaning "Slackware is too hard for me". |

SSH into the box from another and do the same as above. Thank you, nice tip-- I will try it on freeze up next time. (For anybody googling that finds this, I also recently figured out that Ctrl-Alt-F7 brings one back to one's original GUI after doing Ctrl-Alt-F2, Ctrl-Alt-F3, etc.) -- If you have walked all these days with closed ears and mind asleep, wake up now! -- Gandalf |

This Linux thing is trying to swallow you up, like quicksand. ;) -- imotgm "Lost? Lost? I've never been lost... Been a tad confused for a month or two, but never lost." |

Not much to do but linux, play some computer games (also I just noticed Unreal Tournament 2007 is to be released March 31 2007) |

The grand-kids aren't sure what to do with the Christmas snow boards and sleds. I went out and plugged a flat tire that picked up a nail, in my tee-shirt. Came back in sweating my ass off. This ain't January, as I know it. :P I just got back from helping a friend build an Athlon 64 computer, and installing SUSE 10.2 on it. Somebody in the family put his brand new Linksys router, in the unopened box, in a box of stuff they took to Goodwill. He is NOT happy about that. Big time bummer. Tomorrow, I get to start his Linux training, so I'm stuck in the quicksand too. :) -- imotgm "Lost? Lost? I've never been lost... Been a tad confused for a month or two, but never lost." |

UT game was running full screen, perhaps I will try it windowed. However, I did drop it from 32 bit to 16 bit video game mode and it has not frozen up since, before in 32 bit mode it was freeing once a game on cue. > 2. SSH into the box from another and do the same as above. I will try that just as a learning experience. |
