Re: Wireless Internet (Late reply to thread)

I know this doesn't help those who have already purchased a WiFi card, but
FWIW for those who are shopping and doing the proper research ahead of
time, I use a D-Lonk DWL-G510. 802.11b/g, supports WPA (according to the
box). According to the box, it's designed for Windows 2000 and XP.

lspci shows the following:

0000:00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78)

It does require ndiswrapper, which cheerfully uses the driver provided on
the CD. I'm approximately 50 feet or so from the nearest AP, going
through one, if not two, household walls, and I still maintain 54 mbps
with noise level at -256dB and link level at -84 dB. Of course, not all
programs interface with it perfectly, for example my wmwifi app doesn't
show a link even though there is one. For that matter, neither does
iwconfig:

[Serenity][pts/0]
[root][/home/cj]# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"munged so you can't see"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.xxx GHz Access Point: mu:ng:ed
Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
------>> Link Quality:0/100 Signal level:-87 dBm Noise level:-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx
excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

But the fact remains that here I sit, at 54mbps 50 feet away through two
walls.

It wouldn't be my first choice -- and in fact, wasn't -- but for the price
and availability of alternatives, this is a satisfactory card. In
Windows, I have played Descent3 and Delta Force online with minimal issues
over connection speed/quality, and in Linux I have very little problem
playing bzflag with it (although occasionally I do get autopunted for
ping delay).

Hope it helps someone.
