| Using a Fax Modem on Linux and a 3G HSDPA Card? I'm about to switch to Ubuntu, however there's one more thing I need to know. Can you send a FAX through the modem on OpenOffice? Setup like a printer in Windows. Also I might be getting a Laptop and a 3G HSDPA Card. How linux friendly are these? Cheers. |

Send e-mails instead..and if you think that 'hard copy' means something., just et a copy of photoshop and see how easy it is to forge signatures, and alter documents that purport o be 'true faxed copies.. DAMHIKT ;-) |

So your saying it's not possible? I'll be using Ubuntu, although I doubt that makes any difference. |

I don't know about that. I've got a nice, working HylaFAX setup here that wasn't too difficult to set up. No e-mail is involved. I simply use the 'sendfax' command-line utility (there are GUI front-ends, too) to send a file. The OP could just print to a file from OpenOffice and then use sendfax to send it. It is also possible to configure OpenOffice to send faxes directly by using the same setup tool used to configure printers. I've never tried it myself, since few of my outgoing faxes originate in OpenOffice. > Send e-mails instead..and if you think that 'hard copy' means > something., just et a copy of photoshop and see how easy it is to forge > signatures, and alter documents that purport o be 'true faxed copies.. Sometimes the fax is a legal requirement. The courts will recognize a signed, faxed document as a binding contract. They won't (at least not in my experience) recognize a scanned image of that same document. It doesn't necessarily make sense, but that's the way it is.... |

I've not done this paticlar action myself - faxing from Linux - but have struggled with modems in Linux - mainly for firewalll. Q1. Is this an internal or external modem? Q1a. If internal - there is a high probability of manual intervention needed: see www.linmodems.org for struggling with 'winmodems' - internal PCI card. Q2. Have you tried the Ubuntu forums? It seems 'efax' and 'Hylafax' 'might ' be what you're looking for - again - I have not done this - just perused the posts that came up after I searched for 'fax' on the forums: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ I couldn't find anything for #g or HSDPA, but I suggest you have a chat with the IT guys of your service provider. This might also help: "This is a "howto" to get the 3G cards to work under Linux." http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=21726 retief Plse remove whatever is necessary to make a sensible address |

Have you thought about using a FAX service? There are online FAX services that allow you to send and receive FAXes via e-mail. Another solution is an All in One printer/scanner/FAX. I have an HP 6110 which works fine with Linux as a printer and a scanner, I haven't tried to FAX from my system directly so I don't know if that works but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. HP provides and excellent driver for their All in Ones so chances are they have FAX support. But even if they don't you can still use the box as a standalone FAX. |

I have sent faxes from linux many times: I create the document in OpenOffice, then print it to a postscript file and send that with efax through an internal or external faxmodem. This works fine. I don't fax often enough to get more elegant, but there's a kprintfax driver that allows you to "print" directly from OO to the fax and no doubt a gnome version as well. I have never faxed from windows, so can't compare. |

A scanned (and edited) document then sent by fax would not be distinguishable from a "raw fax" - while the same, as e-mail attachment, may contain exif information or other magic strings from the picture editing program. But not a originating phone number, just a e-mail addy which can be spoofed too easily. -- vista policy violation: Microsoft optical mouse found penguin patterns on mousepad.
