Hi Moog! Can I ask which version of Ubuntu? I presume Intrepid Ibex..
and how did you load the distro without a cdrom / dvd drive?

Will that do for you?

FWIW, I have the Acer Aspire One. It's a great piece of kit. It comes
with LinpusLite (Based on Fedora) but I've loaded it with Ubuntu and it's
fairly impressive (although slower to boot that way)

The way I've done it is to put a disc image on to a USB memory stick. Works
well. I've put a somewhat modified version of Puppy Linux on to my Acer and
Asus netbooks, with excellent results.

Thanks for the link - it looks like the info is there though one must dig
a bit to get it.

I've read the install guide for putting Debian on the Aspire - and
glimpsed the Ubuntu install page - looks like a little hassle is involved
to get wifi etc. up and going. Our local Staples has one though loaded
with MS. Looks like a nice package.

It's all contained here...
http://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne

Most of the above are tweaks relating directly to Hardy.

For Intrepid...
The only real thing you need to do is make sure the CD/DVD is enabled
as a repository then issue the following...
$ sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules
This should pull down to the correct kernel version of the restricted
modules. Ath5k is a part of them, and your wifi will then work after a
reboot.

You can then tweak a few things such as limiting log writes to the
ssd, etc. But they are not required.

I have an external DVD burner.

However, you can also do exactly the same using a Live Stick Install
of Intrepid.

See
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2008/10...-from-live-cd/
(for instance)

Sorry. "Or USB Install"

Run a Live CD on another PC...
Go to System -> Administration and select Create a USB startup disk.
Select the Ubuntu image and the USB device, then press the Make
startup disk button at the bottom of the window.

Then boot your aspire with it and install.
