Evolution can't send or receive

Running Ubuntu 8.04 with Evolution 2.22.2. Last friday my pc froze, so I
ctrl-alt-backspace and logged in again. From then onwards the send/receive
button in Evolution is blank, i.e. the text on the button is very pale and
clicking it does nothing. Composing an email and sending leaves the email
sitting in the outbox.

I've tried removing and re-installing Evolution via Synaptic, but no luck.

Any suggestions, besides using another email client?

TIA

Rob

There hasn't happen anything with the evolution binaries or default
settings, so re-installing will not do any difference.

Look for where evolution stores it's files in your home directory
(hidden files), one of those files has most likely been damaged,
removing the file will solve your problem (which file to remove I don't
know).

Check that you have not clicked the offline button in the menu.

Also, just a guess, but look for a .LOCK file in /var/lock
Maybe evolution was in the middle of some operation when you killed everything
and the lock didnt get cleaned up.

In this case it is not relevant, as you have clearly logged out and in
again in the meantime. However ... after killing evolution with c-a-bs or
with a 'kill' it is wise to do a
evolution --force-shutdown
otherwise the data server may still be running.

"Work off-line" greys out the buttons. Select File > work on-line;
allows you to use the send/receive button.

Check your processes for an errant Evolution PID, purge
~/.evolution/cache/*.

Use stable software rather than the Debian "testing" branch Ubuntu
employees.

Abandon the Windows mentality. What could de/re-installing possibly do?

Easier said than done. Senses gradually begin to abandon the ones like me
when stuck with cul de sac issues. I "installed" new kernel and screwed
system from bad to worse to the point that reinstalling remained the only
option. May or never be the last resort for many experts here, but for some,
reinstalling does bring some peace of mind, though not always.
