| Java / Sound - Does Java *have* to be stupid? Ok; I've got essentially two apps in java that want to touch sound, firefox starts java that plays something (usually something stupid, for years I had java turned off in the browsers), but I also have "softsqueeze" - a music playing program (it simulates a squeezebox that I have in the other room - very convenient). Often, after running some java dingy under Firefox, I'll start up softsqueeze which will pop up a message claiming it can't find the sound device, and go mute. It used to be that I could kill off an npviewer.bin program running under firefox (which would bung youtube for the rest of the life of that firefox process), and get sound back. That was livable. However, under Firefox3, that's blended in with the other firefox processes, and I can't tell which one (quitting firefox, and restarting it, fixes this, but ...) I'm using the "Java MP3 Engine" -- does anyone know how to direct that to use arts instead of trying to grab some device? Is there some "don't be an idiot" flag that I'm missing here? - Tom [Or, I can go back to my happy place, and just disable java under firefox :-] |

Seems like you have a bad audio configuration and/or you have a audio card without mixer. I suggest you look for information about dmix for ALSA in your distributions documentations, that should solve your problem of having only one application that can use audio. -- //Aho |

Not a problem with 2 applications. In fact, java and an application work -- just not two java applications. The alsa seems to be configured correctly, it's just the dumb "Java Sound Audio Engine" that seems to be broken -- and I honestly don't have the slightest idea about what to start de-botching that. Hence why *Java* would be discussed in my message, and *Java* is on the subject line.... vlc works fine with other java. In fact, the "persistence" of the java under firefox seems to be the one holding the audio device.... - Tom |
