Enter run level: 2, or something like this


maybe it's a patch to the kernel?

1. If we are talking about plain text (as this post is written with),
then it's just simple scape codes put into the start script, keep in
mind that it's the same script that will take care of the selection of
runlevel and starting services.

2. If you mean the grub, it can use images and escape codes for colors.

3. if you mean the image and progress bar during boot up, then it's a
bootspalsh theme used, it require some kernel options enables (it's so
done in most distros today) and the bootspalsh application and the
theme. This require also that you create a initrd for the kernel, if you
don't already have one.

Regardless of your opinion, Dan C. is correct about the escape codes and
did help OP. OP was not specific enough describing what he viewed on
screen. Therefore, Dan C's advise is good on two levels:
1) the answer is correct
2) it allows OP to find exactly what he's seeking and *learn* something.

It's the old saying, "Give me a fish and I eat today; teach me to fish
and I eat for a lifetime" in action.

Which do you prefer, to keep helping someone many times or teach them to
assist themselves? Please don't say "many times" as the first is to
support stupidity and promote laziness; the last is to truly benefit a
user. Personally, I prefer to uplift rather than enslave and thereby
remain their attendant.

I could tell by his comments and wording that the original poster didn't
know enough to discern any useful data by looking at the startup scripts
even if he knew what they were and where to find them. This was a useless
suggestion in this instance.

No, not useless. Anyone with even half a clue could put that into Google,
and find the information he needed. Just because you are incapable of
logical, reasoned thinking, do not assume that nobody else can do it.
