| apt-get upgrade vs. apt-get dist-upgrade confusion. I am confused with the differences between "apt-get upgrade" and "apt-get dist-upgrade" after an "apt-get update": # apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. # apt-get dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done The following NEW packages will be installed: esound-clients libccid pcscd perl-doc 0 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 8441kB of archives. After this operation, 14.7MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Isn't "dist-upgrade" not to show anything? dist-upgrade seems to download from http://ftp.debian.org testing/main. I am confused on why this is happening. Maybe I missed something. | Re: apt-get upgrade vs. apt-get dist-upgrade confusion. 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades all packages for which newer versions are available and which can be upgraded without removing anything. 'apt-get dist-upgrade' upgrades your installation from one release to another, making whatever changes are necessary to permit all packages to be upgraded, including removals. -- John Hasler |

So. when you are tinking of dong anything, irst do apt-get update to synch your lists with what exists on the distro servers. Then apt-get upgrade will install the latest versions of everything in te current distro and apt-get dist-upgrade will IIRC get you the latest kernel version. This works for most people (apart from Jerry Stuckle). |

Packages currently installed with new versions available are retrieved and upgraded; under no circumstances are currently installed packages removed, or packages not already installed retrieved and installed. New versions of currently installed packages that cannot be upgraded without changing the install status of another package will be left at their current version. An update must be performed first so that apt-get knows that new versions of packages are available. .... dist-upgrade dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. The /etc/apt/sources.list file contains a list of locations from which to retrieve desired package files. See also apt_preferences(5) for a mechanism for overriding the general settings for individual packages. -- Dr Balwinder S "bsd" Dheeman Registered Linux User: #229709 Anu'z Linux@HOME (Unix Shoppe) Machines: #168573, 170593, 259192 Chandigarh, UT, 160062, India Gentoo, Fedora, Debian/FreeBSD/XP Home: http://cto.homelinux.net/~bsd/ Visit: http://counter.li.org/ |
