| nikon software I'm thinking about getting a notebook that runs on linux. I have essentially no experience with linux or *nix-related operating systems. I have a Nikon Coolpix 5400 digital camera. It came with software I had to install on my (Windows) computer for uploading pictures from the camera to the computer. Nikon supplies software that works with Macintosh or Windows -- period. Their website states that they have no intention of supporting any other sort of OS. Is there any way I can continue to use my camera and upload pictures if I get a computer that runs on linux? |

Yes. There is absolutely no need for your manufacturer's software if you're using Linux. It's almost certain that you will be able to plug the camera in, mount as a mass storage device and transfer pictures. If that fails (not bloody likely) you can always use a USB card reader - IMHO that's preferable anyway. I recall when my wife got her Coolpix 2100 for birthday several years ago, I had it running with Linux before we even found the MS software. You can also use GIMP for photo editing - it's all free. |

I store everything to the SD card. When I want to get them to the computer I put the SD card into a card reader and let Linux mount it. Copy/move what I want and edit with GIMP as I like. As for movies (MOV), I watch them with VLC and edit using Kino. -- sk8r-365 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; -- Matthew 10:3 |

You can count those on the fingers of one of your hands and they tend to be old too, pre 2k, today 99.99% uses PTP and ptpfs is still experimental, so no mounting of those cameras. Yes you can access the data with libptp, still not mounting. Most camera software uses libptp, so no trouble to use todays cameras in Linux. -- //Aho |

The gphoto library (used by Digikam and most other camera utilities under Linux) recognizes the Nikon Coolpix 5400 camera in PTP mode. If you use the camera in "Memory" mode, the Linux kernel usb handlers (iirc, usbstorage) will recognize the camera as well. In other words, you don't need a propriatary application to access your Nikon Coolpix camera; it is supported by open-source applications and the linux kernel directly -- Lew Pitcher Master Codewright & JOAT-in-training | Registered Linux User #112576 http://pitcher.digitalfreehold.ca/ | GPG public key available by request ---------- Slackware - Because I know what I'm doing. ------ |

And we don't have to worry about all the half working demo programs that comes with the install CD, one or more program for each new hardware and they don't seem to work with other hardwares. -- //Aho |

I just takeout the memory card and pop it into the reader on the computer. No fuss no hassle ! -- Best Regards: Baron. |
