Now that we have all had fun

An honest question - seriously.

If I install any of the Ubuntu family and the LiveCD does not have the tools
necessary to reach my ISP, where do I get those tools, assuming this is my
only computer and only access to the internet?

What I have is an ISP who requires user name and password at each ADSL
logon, just like a dialup modem. If I had a wireless router I could set it
up to handle the handshaking, but since I don't how do I connect?

Step by step would be helpful here.

Deb

hi there,

how about pppoe? and pppoeconf should do this? On the debian netinstall images it is included and i think it is also included in the most other distributions.

bye bye,
Steffen

I use wvdial to connect using a built-in 3G wireless card in my laptop.
Should work fine for your purposes and again, is available in most distros.

Steffen, thanks, PPPOE, is exactly what I need, except that on the Ubuntu
LiveCD PPPOE is not installed, or at least, if it is its well hidden.

Thnaks, I will take a look, but did not see it as an installed app. But
then I was not specifically looking for it either.

Thanks again.

Dan, a man I knew once said, "You can never convince a man he is wrong when
he thinks he is right."

Your picture is cute. Your conclusion is wrong.

Either pppoe or wvdail (maybe both) is likely available to install from the
LiveCD. If not included on the LiveCD, simply setup the online repositories
and install whatever you need/want.

Whatever OS you want to install, try asking someone that has it if it has
everything built-in to do what you want. Maybe try the Ubuntu forums?
That's the sure why. If it doesn't download those packages first, maybe
burn them to CD or something. This is what I did.

Another option is just dive in, and try to make it work. I'd bet if you're
connecting in a popular way, the tools will be included. I don't know much
about ADSL - never used it. If you end up stuck, get a USB stick, go to
your friend's system, download the thing you need, and take the USB stick
back home to your system. These come in sizes just big enough for your
needs, like 200mb for around $10. They usually are vfat filesystems which
can work on Windows, MacOSX, and Linux. I frequently use one to get big
files from my friend's MacOSX w/cable modem, instead of waiting months for
the download on my system. These USB sticks are really cheap, I got a
2g one for $16.

Run pppoeconf as root and follow instructions.

When I put Xubuntu on my old PC, I simply plugged an ethernet cable
into my modem, started firefox, entered my name and password, and
happily surfed away!

Effortless.

Cheers,
Steve
