| Star Office Trying to install Star Office and everything goes well until I get to the install screen (download and unpack worked well). When the install box comes up, it has nothing in it. Just a blank box, with the steel grey back ground Sun likes, that you can close with no problem. In other words, the box is "live" but blank. Of course, all install stop at that point. Any ideas? Thanks Deb |

Yours isn't a very informative background setup for a question. It doesn't describe what 'method' is being used to install what Star Office to what (presumably) linux distro and desktop environment. The majority of linux distros of various DEs come with SO preinstalled. The majority of linux distros and DEs use a package management system which doesn't isolate any kind of process which resembles 'download and unpack'. So as a result, your question setup leaves the reader to imagine what you are doing and why you are using the words you are using in the way you are using them. It is an interesting little game that some of those who help those who ask questions play to try to guess at what the questioner was looking at and thinking about and using when they were struck to ask the question, but it isn't a good way to get the results you want. Why don't you start by not assuming that anyone who is reading your post knows what kind of operating system you are working with and what v. of SO you are wanting to install and what method you are using to install it. -- Mike Easter |

I downloaded the SO file NOT OpenOffice, but Sun's StarOffice 8. Ran the "sh xxxxxxxxx.sh" command and things proceeded as they should. A terminal window opened and asked me where I wanted to unpack the "sh" file. I accepted the default and it unpacked the file into the "tmp" directory and then opened the Install window. That was all as it should be, the only problem is, the Install window was blank. It may well be a video setting, but before I mess with too much, I was wondering if someone else had had the same problem thanks Deb |

Enter the following command: export DISPLAY=your_machine_name:0.0 or enter the equivalent commands for your shell environment. Change to the directory that contains the StarOffice 8 installation program. Start the setup script. Enter the following command: ../setup Follow the instructions. -- Mike Easter |

Will try each one and keep on until one makes it work. Thanks Again Deb |

| Re: Star Office Dr. Deb wrote: > Will try each one and keep on until one makes it work. What is the principle basis for your interest in Star Office 8 as opposed to OO 2.4.0 with additional extensions or other resources -- or even OO 3.0b for that matter? -- Mike Easter |

Turned off Compriz and "bingo." Thanks to one and all. Also, if you get an error message that says, "org.hsqldb.lib" when running Base, the fix is simple (no I ain't that smart, but Google is) load the base file, do a "SaveAs," close out the current file and open the one you saved. Works. Deb |

Star Office is also supposed to have some features which OO does not. I'm not sure how SO8 compares and contrasts to OO3. My understanding is that the OO code doesn't include all of the SO code because Sun pays some licensing fees to others for some pieces and parts of SO, and that's what you get for your money. According to one of my favorite word processor comparison sites^1 which is fairly uptodate, these are the differences in OO/SO: <snip> Those things which are present in StarOffice but are not available on OpenOffice.org are not extraordinarily different but include: Certain fonts (including, especially, Asian-language fonts) The database component Adabas D Additional templates Extensive Clip Art Gallery Some sorting functionality (Asian versions) Additional file filters Commercial spell checker and thesaurus Migration assessment tool (Enterprise Edition) Macro migration tool (Enterprise Edition) Configuration management tools </snip> ^1 http://www.donationcoder.com/Reviews...cs/#openoffice -- Mike Easter |
