XP reinstall

Got a question. I would like to reinstall XP so it will take advantage of
my SATA drives (after all speed was the whole reason I bought them in the
first place). I would not even be considering this if Wine were a bit more
stable. The only thing I use XP for is to play WoW. I had it working
under Wine (PCLinuxOS 2008MiniMe) and did a general upgrade. Between the
update to the system, including Wine and the updates Blizzard made to Wow,
I cannot get WoW to run under Linux any more. Bummer - much better
experience than under XP.

When I installed XP, I did not know it would not read SATA, after all
Windows is the latest and greatest OS ever written. Right? Yeah, right.
Anyhow I did the install on the new box and all went well. Got Linux up
and running afterward (which was easier than the XP install). Then noticed
that I was running my drives under IDE. Changed to SATA and, you know what
happened. Linux ran like a top and XP refused to load.

So, if I reinstall XP, which will wipe the bootloader, into the existing
partition and then install PCLinux OS into an empty partition, but mount
the existing Linux partition under the new install. Then I can grab my now
current bootloader file (menu.1st), copy it to the new partition, rerun the
bootloader app and I should be able to boot to my current Linux partition.
I could then, rerun the bootloader just to tidy things up.

Will that work?

XP is *five years old*, try a five year old linux and see how far you get
with any modern stuff.

You need a disk with the sata drivers on it and you load it at the start of
the install just after XP has booted.
If you want sata without loading the driver disk use vista which is only one
year old and has sata support built in.

Of course your MB manufacturer may not do XP drivers as its such an old OS
then you are stuck with vista (which is better than XP).

no idea you lost me.

You can install grub from most of the live CDs without having to install
another linux.
I have never done so so I wont try and tell you the command but it should be
in the grub help.

Before you go wipe it all and reinstall why not switch your BIOS back to use
IDE emulation for the SATA. Boot to XP, install the XP driver needed for your
SATA chipset, reboot, switch the BIOS back to SATA and see what happens? If it
does not work you are no worse off than you are now. :)

Dennis, we all have our own opinions of XP and Vista, I am glad yours is a
high on Vista as it appears to be.

As for me and my house, it just isn't worth the expense of buying an OS from
Microsoft since the only use I have found for it is playing WoW and that is
not a necessity.

So reinstall xp and boot a live cd and reinstall grub
or setup windows to dual boot linux
(http://highlandsun.com/hyc/linuxboot.html is one way).
You still need the sata drivers to make xp run anywhere near as fast as
linux.

Linux installation media usually has rescue mode, which gives a console
environment with the most common gnu tools.

Maybe I am the first person you have run into that knows what vista does and
how to use it?

However you are not the first person I have run into that thinks its easier
to clean a linux system than a windows one.
Try cleaning up after the ssh key debacle and you will find out just how
hard it is to be sure a linux machine that has had a security hole in it
really is.

This one incase you haven't checked your systems yet.
http://www.computerworld.com/action/...intsrc=hm_list
You need to check for exploits incase you or a machine you trusted has been
compromised as well as applying the patch.
Windows and Mac users also need to check as there are an unknown number of
linux servers that could have been compromised that they may have been
trusting.

What would you know about "cleaning" a Linux system, you clueless,
ignorant Win-droid?
