| **** Small Linux Well I'm going to see what happens. I do volunteer work for a Non-Profit orginization... and refurbish donated computers which in-turn are sold at a rock bottom price to the fixed income members. The machine are generally p-II's and once in a while a p-III will turn up. Since it's a Non-Profit org...they can re-license the machines with Win2k for $5 each. It keeps things legal...but considering that the machines are being sold for just $10 each... that leaves just $5 per machine to fund the program. (After all, I do have to scrounge up and occasionally pay for used parts.) Today, someone gave me an old P-II-300 server...partially stripped down. But... I found a real nice 2gig Ultra-wide SCSI drive up in my attic... but there is not too much one can do with a 2gig drive....or is there? So in just a matter of a few minutes...I install **** Small Linux on the machine and it works great. Heck I could have used a lot smaller drive had I wanted to. Since for the most part...these machines are just used to check email and do a little web surfing... I think this machine may work out well. Considering how the funding was cut this year...every little bit helps! |

You forgot to tell us where it is! Here it is so the rest of you don't need to search. It is nice, but having to use MyDSL extensions etc is really quite annoying, I would much prefer a mini-linux installation LIKE ****small, but not meant for liveCD usage. On another note, the absolute smallest bootable linux system I've messed with is TTYLinux - 3.7 MB bootable CD image. Holy freaking crap! (of course it's only meant to let you dial out into another system, but still) (http://www.minimalinux.org/ttylinux/) -- PGP Key: 0xBD652112 |

Oh yes there is - I'm currently working on a MiniITX comp with 800 MHz and 1Gig of Ram, and the OS (a stripped-down kubuntu, but with KDE) is installed on a 2Gig Compactflash drive. I've been doing stuff with this baby that windows can only dream of - having a completely noiseless comp for one, besides using it with PulseAudio to share my sound system and all sorts of routing and DNS stuff with various VPNs, and last but not least the everyday web surfing and emailing. Wouldn't want to miss it, and everything's running off a 2Gig flashdrive :) Michael |

I decided to upgrade the machine to one of those and leave it at that. However...It was not too very long ago when I upgraded my P1 from an 850meg drive to a 2 gig drive and was actually nervous about handling a drive so large!!!! A number of years back I did an experiment in "getting the most from the least" and ended up using a 386 with win95 on a 50 meg non-compressed drive. I had to xcopy an existing installation to the smaller drive. Anyway...I am about to 'button up' the (DSL) machine and bring it in to the "club" and see who ends up with it. |

The whole thing would fit on a standard floppy, and included a graphical web browser! QNX was aimed at the embedded market, and I developed two or three products with it before bigger memory space became cheap, and I moved to embedded Linux. QNX also had the problem that it is proprietary... C. |

Heck I used to use it as a modem diagnostic tool. |

Through the years I have tried out many distros...and currently have PCLinux2007 installed on one of my machines... but I was not aware of the 2008 mini. But the 50 megs DSL download is all I need (for now at least) |

Though I did write a few Fortran IV preograms back in the punch card days... and even had a TI-99 back in 1982... I stayed totally away from computers until 1999... so kind of missed those good old days ! Of course within 6 months of having my first PC (with win95) I was trying to get Linux installed...After a lot of fooling around... I was quite please when I finally got RH5.2 up and running. For me...those were the good old days <G> |
