Yes, there are differences, like location of files, package system, default
application, admin tools, run levels, ...
They are part of two different distribution families, one thing they all do
have common is that they use Linux kernel (of course with different patches).

> and how are they laptop friendly?

IMHO thats the wrong question, you should have asked if your laptop is Linux
friendly, as those basters have less common hardware and specifications aren't
easy to get, so some work better and some worse with Linux, but if you can get
one distribution to work on a laptop, then you can get any other distribution
to work too.

Visit www.linux-laptop.net to see if someone else has installed Linux on a
similar laptop and written a howto.

Of course there is a difference. For one thing, Ubuntu uses Debian
package management (.deb files) whilst Suse uses RedHat package
management (.rpm files). That is probably the most significant difference.

Masses of differences. They are both Linux distros, but the similarity
doesn't go much further.

> and how are they laptop friendly?

Well, I've had both of them working on a variety of laptops.

> thanks :)

Pick one or both and give them a try. Each comes as a single liveCD so
you can check how well they work with your hardware before you commit to
installing them.

Also consider looking at Mandriva One 2008, another liveCD. Mandriva is
more similar to Suse than Ubuntu.

I'm using openSuSE 10.3 on my Acer Extensa 5220 Notebook.
Everything is working very fine :-)

Chevy must be better as FORD says you don't own
the pics of your vehicle.

Apparently the issue (which was trademark, not copyright) seems to have
been resolved.

Nobody said anything about copyright. The problem
is that they even tried.

"FORD says you don't own the pics of your vehicle" implies copyright,

If you would actually READ the OP you'd see (s)he didn't ask what was
better - only if there were differences, which, of course, there are.

I've had good luck with Opensuse 10.3 and 3 previous versions on my Acer
laptop and 2 desktop AMD pc's. There is so much hardware out there that
practically everybody can give you different experiences on different
systems with different distros. I didn't like Ubuntu nor Fedora.
Mandriva was ok, PCLinuxOS ran fine. Knoppix ain't bad. Suse is the best.

Of course. Which makes it a stupid ****ing question. Which is what my
counter-question was intended to convey. Got it?

Yes - I 'got it'. Now kindly explain to me why is is stupid to ask about
differences - hopefully without the profanity which, as everyone knows,
is simply a crutch for a weak mind.
