| Sony vaio **** small linux install Acpi errors and can't find correct screen settings Hi there I have managed to get the drive back in the Sony vaio after loading a fresh copy of DSL BUT all is not well. 1 I get messages from the ACPI bios that crop up ever 30 secs or so and are a real pain. they are acpi errors 1133 , 0295 and 0352. I have found threads that tell me that I should enter codes to turn ACPI off BUT I have no clue where to do this. 2 I cannot find the correct screen setup for this machine. Its a sony vaio pcg 505ts. I've reloaded the os about six times now and I really am considering giving up on DSL and loading Ubuntu even though in 64 mb it will suck. if anyone can lend a hand and tell me which file to edit and anything else that might help me out I'd appreciate it. I am a linux noob and am making the leap from Windoze. Even using a command line editor is beyond me.. |

I set up a user and thought this was all I needed to do? I have Ubuntu loaded now BUT it's slower than crap. I think DSL is the better choice for this machine. |

There are a lot of alternatives and I would say all are better than Gnome2. My favorite when it comes to lightweight is ctwm, but I guess many on this newsgroup will say xfce. Even if this one is for RHEL, it's the same for other distributions too. http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/e...-bootopts.html To turn off acpi, add the following to the boot options noacpi if you use lilo, you will need to reinstall it to the MBR avter you made changes in lilo.conf. (using grub, you don't have to do anything than edit the grub.conf) > 2 I cannot find the correct screen setup for this machine. Its a sony vaio > pcg 505ts. Not sure, but maybe your laptop is somewhat similar to the z505sx, then you see how your xorg.conf should look like at this location: http://www.themoes.org/linux/vaio > if anyone can lend a hand and tell me which file to edit and anything else > that might help me out I'd appreciate it. Should tell you that laptops are the most difficult machines to install Linux on, this much for the specification of the hardware is quite unknown and the hardware manufacturers in China who makes all them, don't release the information. There is install howtos at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/sony.html You can look for machines with similar hardware and check up what may be difficult and get tips, even if the howto write did use another distribution. -- //Aho |

I found the link for the z505 BUT am stuck as to how to apply the changes given that I can't see the screen. I'll put the drive back AGAIN in the compaq and give it a shot. I'm a little pissed though as Ubuntu loaded seamlessly but struggles to work in 64mb ram, I'll keep plugging away as I'm learning lots as I do it. Thanks again for helping me out. |

You have to realize that the kernel in DSL is version 2.4 and the kernel in Ubuntu is a version 2.6... There's going to be a lot that the 2.6 kernel will do for your vaio, that a 2.4 isn't. DSL was designed for SMALL installations... low power, low storage... Completely opposite of what Ubuntu is all about. -- Jerry McBride (jmcbride@mail-on.us) |

I'm willing to help. Hey Jerry This guy had exactly the same problem BUT I can't post or ask questions on the site, I have a username and can log in but it won't let me do anything so I can't progress it myself. Any help you can give would be great. http://****smalllinux.org/cgi-bin/fo...nt;f=5;t=19327 I am figuring that this functionality is the same as the olden days autoexecute.bat and config.sys stuff. The problem here is that I don't know what files to change and how to do the changes... > >> 2 I cannot find the correct screen setup for this machine. Its a sony >> vaio >> pcg 505ts. And you expect it to mysteriously work > after > the 6th time? Yep, the issue is that I have to remove the Vaio drive, shove it in a Compaq ( 2.5 to 3.5 converter) load DSL from scratch, put it back in the Vaio, try another screen resolution have it fail and do it all over again. You see once the resolution is wrong I can't see anything thus I can't edit anything. ALSO the acpi messages keep booting in and screwing up the little display I have > >> if anyone can lend a hand and tell me which file to edit and anything >> else >> that might help me out I'd appreciate it. I am a linux noob and am making >> the leap from Windoze. Even using a command line editor is beyond me.. As I say. I am fresh out of the windows experience and wanting to make the leap, the vaio is the only machine that I can use right now for this and has only 64mb ram and a 4gb hard drive. I know it can be loaded with DSL as it's EXACTLY the same machine that they use as an example in the OFFICIAL DSL book http://www.amazon.com/Official-****-.../dp/0132338696 I am really out on a limb here so any help you can give would be great. > > -- > > Jerry McBride (jmcbride@mail-on.us) |

If you got the sshd running on the DSL, then you can connect to the machine with putty and if you ave to move files to the (and scp/sftp is enabled on the DSL), then you can use winscp to move files from the microsoft machine to the laptop. Yet another option is to run a LiveCD and from there mount the file system and do the changes needed. -- //Aho |

I finally reloaded win98 :-) ho hum, I gave it a shot thanks for trying though. |
