| Aliens, Linux, and S.E.T.I. ? (OK I will try this again, not one reply to my previous post about the Paul Allen telescope array a few days ago--maybe I needed a better subject line!) Wouldn't it be interesting to know the operating system used to manage the new telescope array that went online just a few days ago, the Allen Telescope Array (ATA)? I mean, I think it is run by Berkely, S.E.T.I., which would lead me to think Linux. And yet we have Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, footing the 25 million dollar bill. How ironic it would be if the Microsoft billionaire funded such a project that then is controlled by Linux or Unix! |

It uses Linux and Solaris. It can be pretty much taken for granted that large scientific projects use Linux these days. > And yet we have Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, footing the > 25 million dollar bill. Why don't you use the contacts URL there and ask? >And yet we have Paul Allen, one of the founders of Microsoft, footing >the 25 million dollar bill. Free clue: Who did Linus Torvalds work for after he graduated from the University of Helsinki? Ever heard of the company called "Transmeta"? Ever LOOK at that company to figure out whose money that was? Ever wonder what Linus was doing there (besides maintaining the kernel on company time and company hardware)? I'd bet if you used that search engine you are posting from, you MIGHT turn up the email address Linus was using in the mid-1990s. Allan doesn't work for microsoft. 2. Obviously the aliens didn't mention Transmeta to you. Old guy |

No idea which building they may work at, if you see Daniel Robbins, founder of Gentoo, he will be able to give you the answer as he has worked for microsoft as "Linux expert". I did myself notice that there was quite often openings at microsoft for Linux/BSD people, during a period when I was thinking of maybe move to Washington state. -- //Aho |
