| [OT] on the matter of bloat Have to send my time card in via email in the form of a spreadsheet - in MS XLS format, of course. I use OOo to edit and manage the native MS spreadsheet. Today I saved the exact same document in OOo ODS format to compare file size. Here's what I saw: -rw-r--r-- 1 cmo cmo 20526 2007-09-29 09:50 070928-071004.ods -rw-r--r-- 1 cmo cmo 132608 2007-09-29 09:39 070928-071004.xls The OpenOffice file is 20KB and MS XlS is 132KB ! Imagine how much drive space is being wasted world-wide and Net bandwidth due to MS bloat! This singular file size difference is more than a 6:1 ratio. If ever I elect to have my own business, *nothing* MS will be permitted! -- sk8r-365 The only way to make Windows "secure": 1) go to http://goodbye-microsoft.com 2) replace existing operating system. |

I did something similar a few years ago, I had a doc file that I had saved with MS-office at a school, got home edited the file and saved it in ms-doc format with oo, if I remember it correctly I did get a 2:1 ration, even if I had a half A4 page more on the edited version. Something I noticed when comparing the two files was that microsoft stores which font is used almost each line and of course as much information as possible about the user who created the document, like login, computer and so on... -- //Aho |

OTOH, it might be that M$ cut a deal with the government so that when a user creates a word.doc or whatever, the "extra" info wil help the NSA or FBI track and identify that user. <shrugs> :) |

As I recall, the BTK Killer in Kansas City was nabbed when he sent a computer disk with a Microsoft Office document to the cops. Oops, he forgot that it stored the 'user info' identifying him as user "Dennis" on the local church's computer. Didn't take long after that to figure out who he was. Rich |
