Give Up on Linspire

Is anyone else giving up Linspire because of their policies on upgrades?
Version 6 was kept dead quiet, then appeared one day at $100 (with
software subscription)! And their support has been cut to dead zero.
Not what Linux is all about.

if you really feel fond of Linspire then look at Freespire (their free
version).

you know of course that this thread will now be inundated with (k)Ubuntu
adherents trying to convert you - oh well

There is also http://www.xubuntu.org/ which is the only version I will
install of the *buntu clan (I can't stand Gnome|KDE). It is currently
installed on my "testing" rig. I don't actually /use/ it for anything. :)

Actually if they're selling the subscription it's exactly what Linux is
all about. You're free to download the source for their distribution and
build it yourself.

You can keep up with what is going on about linspire and freespire by
reading in the forums and the news and the freespire roadmap page.
http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Freespire_Roadmap

The processes afoot are freespire 2.0 RC which is available for dl as
1.9.21_full-feisty_skipjack-feisty_20070802-1522.iso dated Aug 3. and is
available here ftp://dropbox.linspire.com/freespire-skipjack/

The v.2 of freespire based on Ubuntu and 'compatible' with the revised
CNR will precede an upgrade for Linspire see below.

The general public news is the 'resignation' of the CEO Kevin Carmony
http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS8364062244.html Aug. 05, 2007 - In an
interview today with Linux-Watch, controversial Linux leader Kevin
Carmony confirmed rumors that he had resigned as CEO of desktop Linux
vendor Linspire on July 31.

The released and projected releases of some things are:

CNR 7 Testing Plug-in (in build 1.9.6) - Released July 19, 2007
August 2007 - Freespire 2.0 GM Release (coincide w/CNR.com launch)
August 2007 - Launch CNR.com (for Freespire 2.0; Linspire 6.0)
August 2007 - Linspire 6.1 GM Release (CNR 7 Plug-in for Ubuntu 7.04)

You are not required to use either Gnome or KDE with Ubuntu.

I know this. However, the /default/ "desktop" for Ubuntu is Gnome and for
Kubuntu is KDE (unless that has changed since the beginning of 2007). I
prefer to do the default install of an OSS OS and then add-on what I like
later. With Xubuntu I get a light "desktop" as the default and I do not
have to have Gnome|KDE from the /default/ install. Granted other Linuxen
also have those bloated pigs as the default (Mandriva chose KDE, gag!)
and I find it just as irritating on those as well. :)

Will CNR on Linspire 5 cease to run without the new upgrade?

There is nothing magic about the default selection of packages.

True, but it can take some of us years to discover this. You *really
can* deselect "Desktop Environment" on install, and still end up with
a usable system, even in this day and age. It just takes a bit of
"aptitude install xserver-xorg fluxbox ..." & etc.

This should be more prominently documented, but I suppose it's along
the lines of, "If you want that, then you should know how to do it
...." & etc.

*nix doesn't need Gnome, KDE, $blah, to be usable. The installers are
intent on making the system usable by noobs. If you're not a noob,
you can have it any way you want it. Not even something as ubiquitous
as CUPS is necessary, if you're determined.

Or you can just do 'aptitude install xfce4' and get an Xfce dsktop, or
'aptitude install gnome' and get a Gnome desktop, or 'aptitude install kde'
and get a KDE desktop.
