Sanity check for GNOME?

Mandriva defaults to KDE so I want to set up a profile with a GNOME
desktop. I may be missing something when I selected packages to
install to make this possible. Is there a script or diagnostic that
will tell me that all the necessary components are installed, one that
can inform me what pieces are missing?

I get the built in Mandriva splash screen but nothing beyond that. In
fact when I click on a link in that splash screen I wind up with a
borderless browser with no chance of resizing.

I would like to get a vanilla install of GNOME up and running.

No need to have multiple users for different users, the desktop environments
don't use the same settings files anyway, so they won't mess with each other.
