No I'm not. Download page won't work in a text-only browser, and the forum is reliant on Javascript. Not a good start. I'm now suspecting STUX is another Puppy Linux type of project, interesting and amusing, but essentially another Mini-Windows thing. This is all I need to be put off. Unlike http://www.slax.org Which is more in keeping with the Slackware concept IMO. -- Yellow Submarine? Nah. Its a TeaPot! www.tinyurl.com/382gmp |

In kernel enable "Kernel support for MISC binaries", and in /etc/sysctl.conf fs.binfmt_misc.register = :WINEXE:M::MZ::/usr/bin/wine: and in /etc/fstab none /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc binfmt_misc defaults 0 0 Then use a microsoft theme on the dekstop environment and install a load of closed source applications and you have a boring microsoft using Linux. I reallyt hope it won't be like that on all "popular" distros in a couple of years. -- //Aho |

Or, IOW, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. :( IMO, FWIW, if there is an interest in attracting disgruntled MicroSerfs over to something else, then some kind of at least introductory Linux thing would make some sense, including a touch of that hand-holding M$ users are used to. Ubuntu doesn't do a bad job of demystifying Linux for Windows (l)users. When you consider that a Windows user probably won't have ever /installed/ an operating system (they still insist it came "free" with their computer), the idea of a complete installation is probably quite scary. That's why the Dell Ubuntu initiative is to be applauded. > What? Oh, right. KDE. ;) 8-) - kde is still far enough away from Windows to worry some people! Chris |

I do really fear that that will become too much, to make a MS/Linux where you have only the config applications native Linux and the rest native microsoft. That could give a bad reputation for Linux if wine won't be able to run all the ms applications. > What? Oh, right. That reminds me of one of my occasional adventures in the world of FreeBSD. I spent a few evenings trying to figure out where they'd buried MC, only to find that they didn't even consider it anything more than a curiosity, to be dumped in some "extras" directory on a second CDROM (or something, I forget now). "My god!" I questioned the FreeBSD NG, "Do you guys actually LIKE continually typing the same commandline instructions over and over? Do you not get the point of reducing keystroke related RSI by using a file manager like MC?" Apparently they do like typing. I didn't bother asking them why they have minimal provision of productive commandline tools, but then used Gnome as the default WM. ;) I've been Slacking ever since. P.S. On the comment about Gnome2 devs, there are AFAIK at least two developments of MC, one that got "Gnomed", and then pulled back a bit, and an alternative "lets do this again, huh?" AMC (Advanced Midnight Commander) that I think is now called "MC Lite" or similar. -- Yellow Submarine? Nah. Its a TeaPot! www.tinyurl.com/382gmp |

MC is for sissies and n00bs. -- "Ubuntu" -- an African word, meaning "Slackware is too hard for me". |

Reminds me of their new computing table: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/ Watch where you place your credit card - it'll be the newest means to rob your personal data. Next thing MS will try to patent will be the word "surface" (they have 'windows' now). > Or am I just being cynical here? ;) Not hardly enough - welcome to Bregna (Aeon Flux). -- sk8r-365 http://goodbye-microsoft.com/ |

A popular misconception. There's plenty of power and configurability (sp? - configurableness?) in the Gnome Configuration Editor. Now then.... man gconf-editor "This tool allows you to directly edit your configuration database. This is not the recommended way of setting desktop preferences. Use this tool at your own risk." It does sound like something MS would write. -- Moog "I, Juan Montero, will help you. Let us mount our horses and begin our Quest for trolls..." |

Are we still able to use the word "cynical"? Should we slap a GNU licence on the word while we still can? I'm joking, but M$/IBM/? will not be. 8( -- Yellow Submarine? Nah.
