Just installed Ubuntu 7.04 so now I need to find some sites where I can download some (preferably free) software to enable me to do a lot of what I could do under Windows. That's the beauty of Linux, you don't need to go to all sorts of different websites to search for your software. You can install them all from the comfort of your package manager. > O&O Defrag > Ad-Aware > AVG Anti-Virus Lol, no need dude! Windows is the only system that needs defragmentation, and it's the only system plagued by viruses and spyware. Sybren -- Sybren Stüvel http://www.stuvel.eu/ |

The rest of the stuff on your list, those don't have any alternatives and won't have as there aren't today any need of such. -- //Aho |

I'll take a stab.... Before I start though, here's a list of well known windows apps and their equivalents http://www.linuxeq.com/ > Mailwasher http://kshowmail.sourceforge.net/ (unfortunately this isn't in the ubuntu repositories as of yet) If you want to download it, use the i386.deb file. There may be dependency issues depending on what you currently have installed. The deb package manager will let you know if this is the case. > Eraser My suggestion would be installing the Nautilus scripts. Shredder is one of the "file processing" options. It's also got a lot of other very useful scripts. http://g-scripts.sourceforge.net/index.php Well worth investigating. > 7-Zip Aaah. What's wrong with the current archive manager, "File Roller". If you don't like that, you could have a look at "Ark"? I'm not aware of the features of 7-zip, so I don't know exactly what you are looking for. > O&O Defrag Not required > Ad-Aware Not required. > AVG Anti-Virus There is a version of AVG for Linux. But as there are close to zero linux viruses, you don't really need it. I run Clam. Specifically if I'm passing executables to windows users (a once in a blue moon occurence). But again, AV is not really required. > Window Washer Not required > CDex Grip > Arena Chess 3DChess Chess > GNU Backgammon GnuBG KBackgammon > LimeWire Frostwire (not in repositories) http://www.frostwire.com/ > Nero K3B Gnomebaker Most of the packages above can be installed instantly by using Synaptic System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. No more hunting through download.com for you. That'll save you some time. ;-) -- Moog http://www.last.fm/user/efcmoog/ "Liquor in the Front. Poker in the Rear" |

Don't use it to search viruses on your Linux install, you will just get false positives. -- //Aho |

Just run Synaptic (or aptitude if you don't mind a curses-based interface) and look at the categories of packages. Install any that look interesting, and uninstall them later if you don't like them. There are wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too many choices to be sure that we're satisfying your software needs. -- The three Rs of Microsoft support: Retry, Reboot, Reinstall. |

Most apps you might need will be included in your repository. Start synaptic from the system startup menu and do a search - e.g. 'cd burner' - that one should get you k3b and many others. |

It allows you to see, read, answer and delete e-mails from the server without downloading them to your hard drive. I have found it very useful in Windows. The best I've found in Linux is Kshowmail. It's not in the Debian repositories. At least I haven't found it if it's there. Arnold |
