I would never run that crap You're entitled to your opinion, however misinformed. However, Internet Explorer is /not/ standards compliant, and has so many security issues that you're asking for serious trouble if you use it. The internet is a UNIX environment, and Windows is just a poor, insecure, unreliable client for a UNIX world. Linux, by comparison, emulates UNIX almost exactly. The vast majority of the world's webservers (by traffic) run UNIX or Linux. Microsoft still can't make their webserver software work properly, and it is full of security holes. > and I talked to a professional photog, his camera makes jpgs It might do, but *real* professionals wouldn't use any form of image compression at the camera stage - they might when they process and manipulate the image on a computer, but using JPG at the camera degrades the image to begin with. > nix is for boomers and geeks No. It's for people who want their computers to work properly and to their full capacity. Windows cripples the operation of most hardware, places serious restrictions on what you're allowed to do (your "professional" photographer friend *does* *not* have the licence to manipulate JPG files on his computer if he's using Windows). Grow up! You're living in a UNIX world, whether you like it or not. C. |

ITYM "Must Call Someone Else" :-) The web was invented at CERN. ****, those fscking Europeans! :-P "Microsoft standards ..." WTF?!? Any cert process that leaves one that ignorant is patently worthless. I'm glad he doesn't feel too bad about all the money he WASTED getting it. Or perhaps he does. Anyone paying $30,000/a. for ACCPAC licences KNOWS it's a great system. I wonder if he's ever heard of the fine acronym "RFC". But then, we're just feeding a troll, so I guess he wins. Sigh. I have to assume his condition is congenital, and he ought to see a specialist. I'd start with a lobotimist if I were him, but perhaps that's my prejudices showing ... You deserve all that you get! > MS patches my PC ( and IE7) for anything the hackers can throw at it, > every night at 3am So you're a special friend of bill Gates, are you? All the other Windows losers in the world get their patches once a month. In the intervening 29 days, your computer is wide open to every new exploit. It takes any credible programmer less than 10 minutes to write Windows malware that will do significant damage to your "operating system" and will be missed by all your "anti-virus" nonsense you're paying for. It will also spread itself to all your friend's machines... There is malware out there that you simply don't understand. It's trivial to remotely log /everything/ you do on your computer, including every keypress. That silly little "security" padlock on your banking site means nothing to a keylogger! > even pirated copies, run automatic windows update! No they don't you silly little boy. Even MS have found ways of getting rid of those who won't pay. C |

The tools to do this *use* *the* *Command* *Line* - if you don't do this, your network will be less secure than even most other Windows ones. If you want to issue a "ping", you have to use the Command Line. If you want to check what your network interfaces are connected to, and their addresses, you have to use *ipconfig/all* (a /very/ Unix command) /from/ /the/ /Command/ /Line!/ Seems that Windows is /so/ old fashioned - you still have to *use* *the* *Command* *Line* for most important tasks.
