Ok, I'll bite. How would you perform the following in a GUI?

"move all RAW files in directory X that have been converted to a
JPEG that's stored in directory Y into directory Z"

And don't come up with a "just select the files by hand" or "buy this
expensive program" solution.

Why such a complicated example.

How do you move a directory full of files from one directory to another
ignoring errors like locked files or files you don't have permission to
move, in a GUI?

The GUI predates MS Windows by a long shot (Macintosh and Lisa). Long before you
were born Xerox PARC used it in the 70's. I is not "new" and it is not even all that
good or optimum as a human interface. Read this, you ignorant savage:

Tit. There aren't any JPEG's. They are stored in RAW format.

And the conversion from RAW to JPEG is done *where* exactly?

Fool.

Not really. They worked on "Longhorn" for years. Infighting over what the
OS should be led to many pre-release beta versions, which were then pulled
back and cobbled on some more. Vista is the end result of all that. It's a
mess because there was no corporate vision of what it should be from the
beginning. It's primarily a tool to forcefeed users into complying with
Gates' obsession over piracy. Since most new computers come with it
preloaded, the M$ world will gradually become a Vista world, a world I and
millions of others want no part of.

I would think you guys would be used enough to this kind of stupidity by
now to just ignore it. But then, a good troll once in awhile is a pleasant

Ehm... that moves the JPEG files. I wanted to move the RAW files, but
only the ones that have been converted to a JPEG, which resides in
another directory. Please come up with an appropriate answer before
you start laughing.

Yes, where "for years" equals 3. Then they saw it's futile and started
over with XP codebase.

So, Vista is XP. But new Longhorn server (replacement for win2k3) will
be from longhorn codebase.

> Vista is the end result of all that.

As I've said before, Vista is the end result of pushing DRM into XP
codebase, adding .net in default install and some UAC idiocy.

Cash cow. :) The design ends here.

Oh, right. But that MS world is starting to shrink.

Yes. They're generally frustrated by the inefficiencies, insecurities and
instability of their chosen "operating system", and feel the need to defend
it (no matter how bad it actually is) against the rising tide of FOSS.
Their only form of defence is specious nonsense about how "Linux broke my
computer" or "I can't get iTunes under Linux" or "My favourite games don't
run anymore". These are usually sent under a heading like the one for this
thread, and result in huge amounts of wasted bandwidth.

Dan C - vitriolic, know-nothing badmouth that he is - has a point when he
tells these types to go away in various ways!

No. MS had to abandon much of what had been written - the /real/
programmers left three or four years ago, and the dross left were not
capable of writing anything significant. They took the XP codebase (which
is largely unmaintainable) and tacked on a bit more eye-candy, some
spurious "security" dialogues (that actually do nothing) and all the DRM
nonsense that makes Vista unusable for multimedia purposes.

No - it's likely to be the start of the demise of MS. Because Vista is so
poorly "written", because of the fundamental lack of security and basic
instability, because of the high price demanded by MS, because of the
incompatibility with earlier MS software, and because of the high hardware
specification demanded by the spaghetti code, MS Vista has largely become
an irrelevance.

MS are desperately trying to 'net site parking services to use free copies
of Windows to boost the number of sites apparently using their products!
The 'net is a Unix environment, and Windows is just a poor quality
proprietary client. The only /significant/ websites to use MS' products
are MS' own sites! Every other one of the top 100 use some form of Unix...

The sooner that MS realise that the game is up, the sooner we'll lose all
the restrictive (and illegal) trading methods employed by MS to force OEMs
to only supply Windows (Dell has really started the ball rolling!).

MS probably accounts (now) for <50% of the world's desktops - the Chinese,
Indians and the vast majority of South Americans do not and will not use MS
products. Much of the rest of the world will rapidly follow. There is no
longer the compatibility argument - MS break /their/ /own/
compatibility with each new release! Major European cities and companies
are rapidly migrating away from proprietary software in their droves, and
MS can't handle the competition.

Be happy that you're in at the beginning of the revolution!

C.
