NEW to Linux - considering CD-Live!

I went to linux.org's site - there is a list of firms who alledgedly offer a
free dwnld. All I found (maybe I was impatient!) was sites selling
something - viagra for example! Or this 'n that!

Is there a true CD-Live dwnld site - somewhere? Or am I just better off
going to Best Buy or Circuit City (two box houses in our town) and buy a
box?

Kind Regards,
Wayne D

BTW - I have a box/copy of SuSE 7.1. Is this too old? What are the
chances of a NC upgrade to current levels? (Suppose I should contact SuSE
for this!).

Either that or the free cd sets. Depends on the distribution as to
where you can download. You can check mirrors close to you.

Goto http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ click Proceed to step 2
and pick a mirror to look around under /pub/linux and see what the mirror
supports.

I download/burn/install Mandriva Linux 4 cd set.

I download/burn the free cds, live or production copy.

Why limit your selection from the shelf. You can get the free copy
without support and paper manual or the Vendor Shelf box with
support/manual.
These sites sell both, the free cd is cd burn cost and shipping.

Re: NEW to Linux - considering CD-Live!

Ok! I went to suse.com ... found that they are no longer (??) Novell site
came up.

A reply to my post noted a site - Distrowatch.com - found MANY, many
choices. How do I net it out to ONE??

Look at the page hit rankings on the right hand side. That will give you
some idea as to the most popular. I prefer Ubuntu myself, and it has a
live CD.

No, it is giving the most hit ranking. Not the same thing. I would bet
the people with the most popular distro is not clicking their distro.
They would be looking at what to see what the other distros have, maybe.

and after you have installed Ubuntu, install GFTP (http://www.gftp.org)
right from the repositories (synaptic) and from the bookmarked ftp-sites
in there, you can start downloading as many distro's as you like and in
meanwhile can read bible, eat nuts, and drink uppy, nicton etc

www.distrowatch.com maintains information about all active Linux
distributions. On the information page for each distro you will find
information on where it can be obtained. BTW Ubuntu will even send you
free CDs of their distributions, and they even pay the postage. Kicker: it
can take several weeks.

Go here and download Puppy. The smallest of the live CD's that I know
of. About 80 megs or so. This will give you a good idea of what Lenix is
all about.

1. Ubuntu
2. Suse
3. Fedora
4. PCLinuxOS
5. MEPIS
6. Mandriva
7. Debian

Looks like a good place to start to me.

As recommended by other posters distrowatch will overwhelm you
with choices. Ny recommendation is to download a couple of
live cds, burn them, and then see which one works with your
hardware and personal tastes the best. Two distros I recommend
are simply mepis (www.mepis.org) and
pclos (pclinuxos.com/news.php)

No real indication that the OP is looking for the smallest Live CD
available. IMHO Knoppix and Elive are much more fully featured.

Yes, DistroWatch will overwhelm you at first. Start with their "Major
Distrobutions" page http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

Do some reading, decide what appeals to you and go from there.
