Loading Kindle using pc

Hello,
This question has obviously been covered already but I can't find the thread so please bear with me. I'm trying to transfer material from my pc to the kindle using a usb connection. What do I do? I created a folder and put a book from Gutenberg in it. I hooked up the usb cable to my kindle. That's as far as I got. Any help will be appreciated.
