Safari for Windows

Apple has released Safari for Windows. This post is created in the beta version of the browser.

Downloading was quite easy, as was setup. Clicking on the setup file unpacked the files and started the installation. After 7 minutes of loading files, the installation was complete.

Launching the application took about 30 seconds before the browser window opened. Surfing to this site provided the layout, and logging in brought the first difference between Safari and Firefox. Firefox provides the option to save the password. This was not available on the default installation. However, an option under 'preferences' suggests username and password could be saved. This doesn't work on my installation.

Visiting Harry Potter Chat also presented an interesting layout. Firefox and IE 7 show the page layout well but Safari shows a missing area below the logo.

Tabs are a great feature in FF. Opening links into a new tab is my preference and even a preference available. However, links continue to open in a new window despite setting the option.

This brings me to the preferences section of the browser. Is it just me? I prefer to have a button that reassures me that something is being saved. I made changes and there was no option to save. I clicked on the right hand corner x and re-entered the preference dialog box. Some of the options were different but some were not. Hmm. This definitely needs a little attention.

Finally, I played with the blue RSS feeds button showing for this site. Articles were shown in the browser, but the right side menu options did not work. For example, clicking on the yesterday link did not show any articles.

For now, I'll keep playing with Safari for Windows. I look forward to a different experience from Firefox or IE.
