Re: Cookies problem - Windows 7, IE8

[crosspost to IE General]

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Re: Cookies problem - Windows 7, IE8

Running:

Microsoft Security Essentials
Spybot Search and Destroy

Norton was on the machine when new with Vista, ran Norton Removal Tool
first thing, installed Microsoft Live One Care.

Deleted Microsoft One Care per upgrade instructions, installed
Security Essentials when Windows 7 upgrade completed.

I've tried stopping/reinstalling these programs...no joy.

Thanks.

Did you also download/run the OneCare cleanup tool?

Well, that's interesting. Didn't see instructions for a "cleanup
tool" in the uninstall details for One Care. But...found it online,
downloaded and ran it.

The cleanup tool says I'm not an administrator for this computer, and
aborts.

But I am. I'm the only user, and an administator.

Hmmm. Curiouser and curiouser.

Right click the .exe file -> select "Run as Administrator".

Re: Cookies problem - Windows 7, IE8

Okay...ran One Care Cleanup. No joy.

("Run As Administrator" new to me.)

In the process of fiddling around, created new user account and had no
problem with either website using the new account.

So...something has been corrupted in my account, yes?

Thanks for all the help.

That's certainly a possibility, especially if your OneCare subscription had
expired before you installed MSE.

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start

Yes, I tried resetting IE's advanced settings.

However - the behavior stops when I run in no add-ons mode.

Clearly, this is worth playing with some more.

Thanks! There's hope!

Re: Cookies problem - Windows 7, IE8

Run IE8 in "No Add-Ons Mode":

The sites in question operate normally - as if cookies are being
accepted.

Disable all add-ons, all toobars, everything I can find, and run IE8
in normal mode:

The odd behavior returns, and cookies are not accepted.

Re: Cookies problem - Windows 7, IE8

It's unusual that a Reset doesn't resolve the behavior but No Add-ons mode
does, Doug. See if anything here helps:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx (applies to IE8,
too)

Also test IE running in another and/or a new User Account: Does the behavior
persist in normal mode? ...in No Add-ons mode? ...after a Reset?

Re: Cookies problem - Windows 7, IE8

PABear (and all):

Thanks. For now, I give up...I'm wasting too much time. Migrating to
a new user account is too time-consuming, and since I apparently can't
_completely_ delete IE8 and _completely_ reinstall it, I've turned it
off, and will use another browser - either Flock or Firefox.

I end up doing a clean OS installation about once a year anyway, so
this will all go away then, I'm sure.

Bottom line, for those who might have similar problems was:

- Running Windows 7 (an upgrade from Vista), and after a power outage,
neither Facebook nor My Yahoo would recognize that cookies were,
indeed, turned "on." These were the tabs that were open when the
power went out, and were the only websites affected.

- Running IE8 as another user worked fine.

- Running IE8 in "no add-ons" mode resolved the problem, but even with
all add-ons turned off, running IE8 in regular mode did not resolve
the issue.

If you're searching for a similar problem, go back through the thread,
you'll find the other things we tried, but in the end - none of it
worked for me. I started uninstalling programs, but after a couple,
decided that was _really_ going to take up my time, so I gave up.

PABear, you offered expert advice, I'm sure - but I'm out of time to
mess with this, and sadly, have real work to do starting today.

Thanks, guys.

FWIW, you are not alone! I've encountered posts about the same behavior
after upgrading to Win7 in the (Win7) IE support forum; e.g.,
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...2-50093e4bf09b.

You're welcome, Doug, and thanks very much for your feedback & kind words.
