Do you have PowerPoint or the PowerPoint viewer installed? What happens if
you save to your HDD and open them from there?

If there was a 'Urgent Request' button I would have used that... The choice
is a question or suggestion. Hence... the suggestion to update IE8 to
properly fucntion.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Is the PPTX file an attachment? Is it located on a network somewhere?

It's not up to the browser to render every possible file format. You need an
external plugin to read the format and deal with it. Either buy and install
Office 2007, get the Office 2007 compatibility for Office 2000/2002/2003, or
get the free Powerpoint 2007 viewer
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)

The reason it's being handled as a Winzip file is because that's what an
Office 2007 pretty much is - it's XML that is then compressed using the Zip
format, it most likely that the website you're downloading from is using a
content type header that triggers IE to use Winzip to open it when Office
2007 (or a plugin that can handle the format) is not installed on your PC.

The problem is the Content-type and "MIME-sniffing"
versus the suggested file extension. It's a security issue.
The user has the option of overriding the security issue
in the Security Settings (Miscellaneous section).

A workaround is to rename the cached file's .zip extension
to whatever may be more useful. I suspect dragging the
cached file to an already open app which could receive it
might work too but haven't tried it yet.

FYI

In your reply you stated:

Can you tell me where I could find that setting? Our server application w/ IE 8 attempts to always open on winzip for all clients. I have tried to change content-type / mapping but cannot seem to fix the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Kris
